New-build gardens across the Yorkshire and the Humber
Yorkshire splits neatly from west to east. The Pennine side around Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield is hilly, with clay and shale soils over sandstone, and noticeably wetter. Heading east, the Vale of York flattens out into clays and sands, and the land around Hull is low, flat clay beside the Humber.
That means a hillside plot in Bradford and a flat one near Hull need quite different preparation, even though both start as compacted ground left by the build.
How conditions change across the region
-
West Yorkshire
Hills, slopes and retaining walls, with stony clay soils and more rain.
-
South Yorkshire
Sheffield's hills on the coalfield, and lighter, sandier ground east of Doncaster.
-
North Yorkshire and the Humber
Flat vale clays and sands around York, and low alluvial clay near Hull.
When to lay turf
The east of the region is noticeably drier than the Pennine side. Across the board, April and May and the early autumn are the dependable months; higher ground benefits from waiting until late spring.
